About Sandra Eisert

Special thanks to Sandra Eisert, the art director and professional picture editor who judged the contest and helped design the MWW banner at the top of this page. Sandra was a key contributor to the Pulitzer Prize awarded to the San Jose Mercury News, and she designed the first MSNBC Web site. She has served three administrations as picture editor for the White House and holds  the distinction of being the first person who ever held that position. According to Get the Picture: a personal history of photojournalism, by John G. Morris, “She and [photographer David Hume] Kennerly broke new ground in candid presidential coverage….”

In addition to her stints at the White House, Sandra has been Picture Editor for The Washington Post and for more than 80 photographic books (and counting…), including Material World: A Global Family Portrait, and Women in the Material World. According to Peter Menzel, author of Material World, “I know of no other person alive who has more expertise and experience in two very valuable skills: visual judgment…and the verbal skill to communicate and to explain her visual choices.”

Sandra was also Director of Photography at the San Francisco Examiner, served an internship at National Geographic Magazine, was Art Director for WEST Magazine, and long served on the council that accredits college-level journalism schools internationally.  Her awards include:

  • San Jose Mercury News 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting,
  • Angus McDougall Award for Overall Excellence in Picture Editing
  • First woman to be honored with the Joseph Costa Award from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA)
  • NPPA Morris Berman award.
  • Former newspaper picture editor of the year

Jodi Cobb (Author and National Geographic Staff Photographer) describes Sandra as the “ultimate photographic professional” and “a major influence in the photographic community.”

Mensa of Western Washington is indeed fortunate to have Sandra as a friend.
