Calendar

This page describes our upcoming events. Be sure to check out the SIGnificant notes section!

Unlike the calendar created for the public part of our site, this calendar contains the contact information for each event.

MWW events are organized by members like you. If you don’t see an event that interests you, start one! Just check the monthly calendar for a good date, then send event information to the Editor (calendar@mensaww.org) by the 10th of the month prior to the event. It’s that simple!

We turn this month from the genes in our distant past to genes that may predict our future.
Routine tumor genomic profiling is increasingly used to assess therapeutic options for patients with cancer. The intent of this approach is to identify “driver” gene variants in specific cancer tissues that will allow clinicians to target “actionable” drugs for treatment. However, there is growing concern about the possibility of discovering underlying germline pathogenic variants. Published studies have noted that approximately 12% of tumor genomic profiling reports will reveal an incidental germline pathogenic variant that may warrant genetic testing for at-risk family members. Medical oncologists now incorporate genetic testing into the clinical service framework in partnership with the cancer genetic counseling team.
Presenting this important topic will be Mercy Laurino, MS, LCGC, PhD. Dr Laurino is a licensed and board-certified genetic counselor who received her MS degree in genetic counseling from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and her PhD in Public Health Genetics from the University of Washington Institute for Public Health Genetics. In 2011, Dr Laurino helped launch the genetic counseling training program in the Philippines and ongoingly collaborate with medical geneticists and genetic counselors in the Asia-Pacific region. Her clinical and research interests include hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes, public health genetics, and the return of research results. Dr Laurino is an associate Director of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Cancer Genetics and Prevention Programs and an assistant professor at the University of the Philippines Manila – Philippine General Hospital MS Genetic Counseling program. She was awarded the 2016 International Leader award from the National Society of Genetic Counselors and is the founding president of the Professional Society of Genetic Counselors in Asia.
