Calendar

SPECIAL NOTE

Hey, this is Scott (a ToteMs coeditor). If your calendar item is missing, it was an accidental oversight, on my part. I should now be forwarded emails sent to calendar@mensaww.org. If I goofed and left out your event (or provided incorrect or incomplete details), please send an email to coeditors@mensaww.org, or call me directly at 928-300-3904. We can quickly send out a corrective email to the entire local group.

Do you want to be in the group that proofs the monthly upcoming calendar (this helps me out)? Send me an email. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

This page describes our upcoming events. Be sure to check out the SIGnificant notes section!

Unlike the calendar created for the public part of our site, this calendar contains the contact information for each event.

MWW events are organized by members like you. If you don’t see an event that interests you, start one! Just check the monthly calendar for a good date, then send event information to the Editor (calendar@mensaww.org) by the 10th of the month prior to the event. It’s that simple!

6:30 pm Monthly Gathering
At the BELLEVUE RED LION, the site of our recent wonderful RG. MGs now feature catered appetizers, and those over 21 are welcome to purchase adult beverages in the hotel lounge and take them into our meeting. The hotel is right off Highway 405 at 11211 Main Street, and of course there is plenty of free parking. Our social time will start at 6:30 and we’ll proceed to the talk around 7 pm.

In July we will welcome one of the most popular presenters at Science and Technology Sig. Since speaking to Science Sig last year, Andrew Lincowski has been mostly focusing his work on the TRAPPIST-1 system, whose host star is even smaller than Proxima but the system has 7 planets, three of which are in the conservative habitable zone. He is an extremely knowledgeable and engaging speaker and you won’t want to miss this one!
We are thrilled and honored that one of our favorite Science and Technology SIG speakers is returning to MWW, this time to share his exciting work with our whole group. Andrew is finishing a dual Ph.D. in Astronomy & Astrobiology at the University of Washington, where he has been studying exoplanets, specifically how to understand the atmospheres of potentially habitable exoplanets. Andrew recently won a coveted NASA fellowship in the Planetary Science division for his proposal "The Nature and Characterization of M Dwarf Terrestrial Planets." This award will expand on VPL’s current research in climate-photochemical modeling of terrestrial planets that continue to be discovered around M dwarfs. As Andrew explains it, he is implementing a day/night heat transport structure that can be coupled with the KINETICS photochemistry code to model small planet atmospheres, particularly those around M dwarfs. And this is not Andrew’s first NASA award: in 2014 he received the John Mather Nobel Scholarship while working with Dr Aki Roberge and Dr Christopher Stark at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center on the Haystacks project for simulating exoplanet observations by working on the code for generating a high-resolution spectral image model of the solar system. You don’t want to miss this fascinating talk from a delightful up-and-coming young scientist.
