Calendar

This page describes our upcoming events. Be sure to check out the SIGnificant notes section!

Unlike the calendar created for the public part of our site, this calendar contains the contact information for each event.

MWW events are organized by members like you. If you don’t see an event that interests you, start one! Just check the monthly calendar for a good date, then send event information to the Editor (calendar@mensaww.org) by the 10th of the month prior to the event. It’s that simple!

In November MWW welcomes Dr Nick Holschuh, just back from field research in Antarctica. He is part of the National Science Foundation and the UK’s Natural Environmental Research Council joint 5-year, $25 million effort to study Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier. This massive glacier, nicknamed the &qout;world’s most dangerous glacier,&qout; is the size of the state of Florida, and straddles some of the deepest bedrock in the southern continent. The first scientist set foot on Thwaites back in the 1950s, but only a few dozen researchers have been back since. (Thwaites sits roughly 1,000 miles away from the nearest permanent research station; the weather conditions are particularly bracing.) Over the past 30 years, the amount of ice flowing out of this 120-kilometer-wide region has nearly doubled. Already contributing to rising seas; if Thwaites collapses, sea levels will rise about 3 feet. About 100 scientists are involved in this initiative, the largest Antarctic deep-field effort in 70 years and one of the largest deep-field efforts ever attempted in West Antarctica. The information collected will improve forecasts of the Earth’s future climate.
