Calendar

This page describes our upcoming events. Be sure to check out the SIGnificant notes section!

Unlike the calendar created for the public part of our site, this calendar contains the contact information for each event.

MWW events are organized by members like you. If you don’t see an event that interests you, start one! Just check the monthly calendar for a good date, then send event information to the Editor (calendar@mensaww.org) by the 10th of the month prior to the event. It’s that simple!

We warmly invite adult Mensa women to share our lively discussion! Complete confidentiality is required from all participants. Please bring a food/beverage item to share if you are able. Social Time 1:30, meeting starts at 2:00.
The January Women’s SIG will be at the home of Claire Anderson, 1715 NW 59th St #108 in Seattle, 206-518-0989.
Theme: the annual White Elephant exchange. Each participant supplies one wrapped gift, humorous or just something you want to move out. The gifts are placed in a central location, and participants determine in which order they will take turns selecting them. The first person opens a wrapped gift, and the turn ends. On subsequent turns, each person has the choice to either unwrap a new present or to steal another’s. When a person’s gift is stolen, that person can either choose another wrapped gift to open or can steal from another player. To avoid never-ending circles, each gift can only be stolen once per turn. The game is over when everyone has a present.

How Well do You Know Your Brain?
Our January MG will feature Dr Terri Gilbert, who received her PhD in biomedical sciences from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of New Mexico and the University of Washington. After working as an application specialist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science for 7 years, where she conceptualized, created, and deployed more than 200 live trainings to global audiences, she now leads Gilhou Science Communication. Dr Gilbert was instrumental in the development of the open online resource, the Allen Human Brain Atlas, which puts comprehensive, standardized data from multiple entire human brains into the hands of the global research community, along with tools for mining and making sense of that data. This resource opens new avenues for advancing research programs across disciplines that share an interest in the human brain—from neuroscience research programs based on functional MRI (fMRI) or neuropharmacology, for example, to comparative evolutionary studies and human genetics. The Allen Human Brain Atlas is a multimodal atlas of gene expression and anatomy comprising a comprehensive “all genes, all structures” array-based dataset of gene expression and complementary in situ hybridization (ISH) studies targeting selected genes in specific brain regions. All data are publicly available online (www.brain-map.org) along with a suite of integrated data visualization and mining tools that enable scientists to uncover connections between structure, function, and the brain’s underlying biochemistry.
