Taking the locally proctored test

We strongly encourage you to reserve a seat for a test. To confirm a seat and ensure that there is a test for you, email the Testing Coordinator with your name and the date and location of the test you’d like to take. If you choose to show up without a reservation, you might be able to take the test — at the sole discretion of the proctor, if there is room and test material.

Testing Coordinator

American Mensa offers two test batteries that may qualify you for membership. The first includes both the Reynolds Adaptable Intelligence Test and the Mensa Wonderlic®; this is the battery of tests given most frequently. The second battery is a “culture fair” battery that includes the Cattell Culture Fair, the Nonverbal Reasoning Test and the SRA Pictorial Reasoning Test.

After you test with one of our local, volunteer Proctors, your tests are sent to our National Office for scoring. Within two to three weeks, your tests are scored and a letter with your Mensa qualification status is mailed. That letter also contains the raw scores for each of the tests you take, and you need qualify on only one of the tests to be offered membership.

If you are under 18, one of your parents must sign a permission slip provided by the Testing Coordinator, so be sure to contact the Testing Coordinator in advance to make arrangements. Or, an even better option would be to bring a parent with you to the testing session. We can not test anyone under 14 years of age.

The test takes about about two hours and usually costs $60.00. However, October is National Testing month, so the test will be half price that month!

Note:  Should you become ill at the last minute, do not come; you want to be at your best. However, be sure to notify the Testing Coordinator to remain on the mailing list.

  • A couple of number 2 pencils.
  • $30 in check (made out to American Mensa), or credit card. Mensa accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.
